Llangollen Eisteddfod: Welcoming the World to Wales

Set against the stunning green backdrop of the Berwyn Mountains and the Clwydian Range, the small town of Llangollen hosts its 73rdInternational Eisteddfod. Welcoming more than 3,000 participants from 26 countries around the world, the stages of the town come alive with vibrant culture and colour for a very special week in July.

The history of this event is truly fascinating. Starting just after the Second World War, in an effort to unite countries, previously at war, through the common language of song and the arts. The event did just that. As the steam train approached Llangollen after a long trip, the German competitors were nervous to see so many people standing on the platform. However, the crowds cheered as they stepped off the train, a moment that went down in history.

Fast forward to today, the event still holds much similar messaging- even though the modern day meaning of peace may have evolved. For example, this year, the children’s performance will reflect the climate crisis, there is a special performance dedicated to promoting diverse background in the arts and many European countries will take part.

While cultural competitions take place during the day, by night, the audience are treated to an array of stars visiting Llangollen, everything from Jazz to Indie Rock. From international classical sensation Rolando Villazon, Jazz and blues favourite, Jools Holland, to North West rockers The Fratellis and the Coral. The idea of ‘something for everyone’ shines throughout the whole week.

The International Eisteddfod is surely one for the bucket list in your life time. From Cote d’Ivorie to Ghana, Indonesia to China and Canada to Ireland, the fusion of cultures is a total treat for the senses.

If you are interested in attending this years International Eisteddfod, it runs all week from 1st-7th July, and you can purchase tickets here.
